Leo McIntyre was born in Nelson, New Zealand, and raised in Upper Hutt, near Wellington, attending St. Joseph’s primary school and St Patrick's College Silverstream.

Leo worked as an apprentice painter and decorator for the NZPO and Telecom before a back injury ended his career shortly after qualifying. Depression followed, but Leo then retrained to work at the Police National Video Unit in Porirua, where he developed PTSD as result of overexposure to extremely explicit forensic video material, forcing him to resign. He returned to the paint industry, working for Resene Paints, and began studying NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), after which he decided to pursue a career in mental health.

Leo completed his undergraduate degree in 2002, and since December 2003, has worked as the manager of Temporary Solutions; a Wellington-based employment agency that specialises in placing people with experience of mental illness in short-term employment, while studying part-time for a BA (Hons) Psyc at Victoria University of Wellington, graduating in May 2006. Leo is currently the Chairperson of Balance NZ Bipolar and Depression Network, and Balance Wellington.

Administrator
Kathy is currently helping to develop the position of Administrator for Balance New Zealand. Her involvement with Balance NZ began with stuffing envelopes when the first newsletter was sent out and has gradually expanded. She maintains mailing lists for, and proofreads, the newsletter as well as organising its distribution. Based in Christchurch, she is also able to assist the National Coordinator in an increasing variety of ways by undertaking many administrative tasks.

Born in Scotland, she came to New Zealand in 1969 to be married. She has one daughter and four grandchildren. She was a Significant Other during over 30 years of marriage, finally losing her husband by suicide.

Kathy is retired. She filled a secretarial position for very many years and now wonders how she ever found time to work. When she is not working for Balance NZ she works as a lay worship planner and office assistant at her local Anglican church. She relaxes with reading, watching UK TV or movies, and eating out with friends. There are lots of things she would like to do like researching her family history, getting some more exercise and seeing more of friends in other parts of New Zealand and overseas but the days never seem to be long enough.
