2007 National Training Days Report

The Balance NZ National Training Days where held on the 16-18th of November 2007. Speakers, both international and local, gave presentations on a wide range of topics including quality of life, bipolar employment issues and suicide prevention. Many of the speaker's presentations have been made available for you to read through in PDF format below. Copyright for the downloadable PDFs rests with the original authors, please contact them for permission if you wish to use any of the content.


Below is a brief overview of each speaker who was at this year's training days. Not all PDF presentations were available at time of publishing, but will be made available in a later update:

Associate Professor Annette Beautrais is the Principal investigator for the Canterbury Suicide Project. She is a well-known researcher internationally whose interests include risk and protective factors in suicidal behaviour, pathways to suicidal behaviour, suicide prevention and the impact of bereavement by suicide on close family members. Her presentation was related to Suicide Prevention & Helping Families.

Dr Erin Michalak
is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Mood Disorders, Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, Canada. Her presentation dealt with Quality of Life and Bipolar Disorder. and the global CREST-BD research collaboration team.

Dr. Melinda Suto
is a Senior Instructor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Melinda Suto co-presented along with Ms Sandra Hale on self-management strategies and bipolar disorder.

Presentation by Merryn Statham, Director of SPINZ (Suicide Prevention Information New Zealand) and Tim Antric, Project Manager of the National Depression Campaign for the Mental Health Foundation. Merryn and Tim provided an overview of the Foundation’s activities and mission.

Associate Professor Samson Tse
is the Associate Dean International in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland. Samson's presentation reviewed and discussed the research studies on work rehabilitation and bipolar disorder to identify what the specific issues are for people with bipolar disorder who want to return to or remain in the paid workforce.

Frank Bristol (manager of Balance NZ) and Nygllhuw Morris (director of web-design company Kiwiwebs) gave a presentation on the Balance NZ Digital Strategies Project and an overview of online CMS (content management systems).

CREST.BD
 is a research team comprised of bipolar disorder specialists from around the globe. CREST stands for Collaborative RESearch Team and they study the psychosocial issues related to Bipolar Disorder.
