Huge ups, and huge downs. Sufferers of bipolar disorder can feel deeply depressed, and yet at other times, maniacally up.
Such wild mood swings affect every aspect of a person's life and can be extremely difficult to manage.
Until fairly recently it was thought that the best solution was medication. But mood-stabilising drugs such as lithium have not been the magical cure everyone hoped for, with many patients suffering recurring crises, despite taking their medication.
These days, research suggests that a better form of treatment is to combine medication with therapy. And the best time to do that therapy is when a patient is well.
Enter a group of University of Otago, Christchurch, researchers who have been awarded a $1.2 million Health Research Council grant to run an 18-month study into the effectiveness of combining treatments. READ MORE
